Assignment No. 9 (LAST ONE!)

This is the last blog assignment.  This week we're going to look at some of this history's top guitar players.  Below is a list of the Top 30 guitar players in the world.

  1. ERIC CLAPTON!
    1) Eric Clapton received the nickname "Slowhand" because he would play the guitar so hard that the strings would break. When he was onstage, he would change the strings on the guitar when the audience was clapping.

    2) The hit song, "Layla" was written for a lady named Patti Boyd. Eric did fall for Patti, but she was married to George Harrison at the time.

    3) He wrote the song "Tears In Heaven" for his 4 and 1/2 year old son who died from falling out of a window.

    4) Eric Clapton received 6 Grammy's for his album "Unplugged"
    (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance, and Best Rock Song).

    5) Eric never knew his father since he was raised by his maternal grandparents, he later found out that his father was a Canadian pilot.

  2. Freddie King

    1) Freddie King's name was actually Frederick Christian. However, his mother and father got divorced, and Freddy's last name was changed into King. His mother started to teach him how to play guitar when he was only six years old.

    2) Freddie formed his own band called "Every Hour Blues Boys" and started to preform in late night bars.

    3) King signed up with Federal Records, and made his first single called "You've Got to Love Her With a Feeling", that song was a minor hit.

    4) Freddie was one of the first blues men to have a racially integrated group on-stage behind him.

    5) King went on tour around America, even when his health was failing. He then died due to heart failure.

  3. Carlos Santana

    1.) Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947) is a Mexican and American musician who became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band Santana which pioneered a fusion of rock and Latin American music.

    2.)The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music.

    3.)Santana released its first album, Santana, which it followed with a series of gold and platinum albums during the 1970's.

    4.)In 2009, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

    5.) Santana released Supernatural, which sold almost ten million copies and won eight Grammy Awards.

  4. 3.B.B King
    1)Riley B. King was born September 16, 1925, also known as B.B. King, is an American blues musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

    2) King was formally introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

    3)He is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert King and Freddie King

    4)B.B. King is also known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career appearing at 250-300 concerts per year until his seventies. In 1956 it was noted that he appeared at 342 shows, and still at the age of 87 King appears at 100 shows a year.

    5)Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at No.6 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.He previously ranked No. 3 in the 2003 edition of the same list, and he was ranked No. 17 in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time"

  5. Richard Thompson

    1)Richard Thompson is an English guitarist, singer, and songwriter who earned critical acclaim with his masterful musicianship and darkly witty lyrics.

    2)Thompson’s career began in the late 1960s as a member of Fairport Convention. He made his debut as a recording artist as a member of Fairport Convention in September 1967. He continues to write and record new material regularly and performs live frequently throughout the world.

    3)In October 1972 Richard Thompson and Linda Peters were married, and Thompson, with Linda now effectively his front woman, regrouped for his next album and the next phase of his career.

    4)"Electric" his recent album which was released in 2013, peaked at #16 on the UK Album Chart and #75 on the Billboard 200, making it the highest charting album of Thompson's career in either country.

    5)His genres of music are rock, folk rock, electric folk, hard rock, acoustic, alternative rock, and folk.

  6. Chuck Berry

    1. Chuck Berry's real name was Charles Edward Anderson Berry. He was a singer/songwriter and guitarist.He was born October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri.

    2. Chuck Berry was one of the most popular and influential performers of rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll music during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

    3. He's known for songs like "Johnny B. Goode" and "My Ding-a-Ling."

    4. Berry released his last album of original music, Rock It, to fairly positive reviews in 1979.

    5. In 1985, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

  7. Jimi Hendrix

    1. Inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues, during his service Hendrix formed a band called the Casuals.

    2. In June 1962 he was granted an honorable discharge on the basis of unsuitability, and in 1963, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee and formed the King Kasuals, playing numerous gigs on the Chitlin' circuit.

    3. He helped to popularize the use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and pioneered experimentation with stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings.

    4.The first tune Hendrix learned how to play was the theme from Peter Gunn.

    5.n March 1964, Hendrix recorded the two-part single "Testify" with the Isley Brothers. Released in June 1964, it failed to chart.

  8. Johnny Ramone of the Ramones!

    1.Jack White, both guitarist and singer, born on July 9, 1975 at Detroit, Michigan and his zodiac sign is cancer.

    2.Jack White and his wife made a husband and wife band with her wife on the drums with their band name "The White Stripes".Both divorced on March 24, 2000.Although made their musical partnership stronger.

    3.The Whites Stripes finally scored that mainstream success with their 2001 album White Blood Cells, featuring their first hit song, "Fell in Love with a Girl."

    4.The Whites Stripes became even more popular with their 2003 album Elephant.The "Elephant" won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and "Seven Nation Army" won for Best Rock Song.

    5.The White Stripes' next album, 2005's Get Behind Me Satan, presented a decidedly different sound, significantly more complex, with piano featured more prominently than electric guitar.

  9. Stephen Stills

    1) Stephen Stills was raised in a military family. When moving around as a child, he developed an interest in blues and folk music.

    2)Stills was a close friend of Jimi Hendrix, who appears on Still's first solo album. It was ranked number 3 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums Chart.

    3) Stephen is an American singer and song writer. He is known best for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, and Nash.

    4) To most people, Stephen was considered to be one of the greatest musician/songwriters of the 20th century.

    5) Stephen Still has five kids. Four sons named Chris, Justin, Oliver, and Henry and one beautiful daughter named Jen.

  10. Jeff Beck
    1)Geoffrey Arnold "Jeff" Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English rock guitarist.He is one of the three guitarist who have played the yardbird.
    2)He was rank 5th in the Rolling Stones list of "100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time and has described him as one most influential lead guitarist in rock.
    3)He began his career in the 1960s.Jeff Beck's solo album Blow by Blow was release on March of 1975
    4)He recorded the instrumental soundtrack album Frankie's House (1992)
    5)Jeff Beck won his third Grammy Award, this one for 'Best Rock Instrumental Performance' for the track "Dirty Mind" from You Had It Coming (2001).

  11. George Harrison

    1. He was an English musician, singer and songwriter who achieved international fame as the lead guitarists of the Beatles.

    2. The genre of Harrison's music is rock, pop, world music, and experimental.

    3. He composed "While My Guitar Gently Weep", "Here Comes the Sun", and "Something", the Beatles' second most-covered song.

    4. After their band's break up, Harrison released several best selling singles and albums as a solo performer.

    5. The Rolling Stne magazine ranked him number 11 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time".

  13. Ry Cooder

    1.Ry Cooder is an American musicia he is known for his slide guitar work his interest in roots music from the United States, and, more recently, his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.

    2.His solo work has been eclectic, encompassing folk, blues, Tex-Mex, soul, gospel, rock, and much else.

    3.The genre of Cooder's music is Pop/RockStage & Screen Blues, Latin and International.

    4.He was ranked eighth on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

    5.He has collaborated with many musicians, notably including Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Randy Newman, and The Doobie Brothers. He briefly formed a band named Little Village.

  14. James Burton

    1) born on August 21, 1939, in Minden, LA and started his career in 1950.

    2) he is an influential guitarist and started as a backup musician on a talk show Louisiana Hayride in the 1950s and met Dale Hawkins

    3) based on his unique and brilliant guitar skills he perfected a style called "chicken pickin"

    4) he had jobs as side musician with casts such as the Buffalo Springfield ers, the Monkees, Elvis Presley's band, Gram Parsons and Joni Mitchell.

    5) he was so busy so he cut onky 2 of his own records "Corn Pickin" and "Slick Slidin", both his 1969 debut.

  15. Mike Bloomfield

    1) American Musician guitarist and composer born in Chicago, Illinois, became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960's to earn his reputation almost entirely on his instrumental prowess.

    2) Bloomfield knew and played with many of Chicago's blues legends before he achieved his own fame and was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music.

    3) In 2003, he was ranked as number 22 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time.

    4) Bloomfield's solos, like most blues guitarists', were based primarily on the minor pentatone scale and the blues scale.

    5) Bloomfield's influence among contemporary guitarists continues to be widely felt, primarily in the techniques of vibrato, natural sustain, and economy of notes.

  16. JIMMY PAGE

    1)He was inspired by rock star Elvis Presley's "Baby Let's Play House" to take up the guitar at the age of 13.

    2)As a teenager, Page joined his first band, Neil Christian & the Crusaders. He toured with the group for a time, but he had to leave after suffering from a glandular fever.

    3)He became a session musician and a producer, working in England's thriving rock scene with such acts as the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Who.

    4)Page was asked to join the Yardbirds, a blues-influenced rock band, which had just scored a big hit with "For Your Love." The band wanted him to take over for Eric Clapton, who left the group for John Mayall's Bluebreakers. Page turned them down and recommended fellow session musician and legendary guitarist-in-the-making Jeff Beck. The Yardbirds sought out Page again the following year, and he finally agreed to become a band member.

    5)Jimmy Page was born January 9, 1944, in Heston, England.
